The energy sector encompasses, amongst other things, the areas of energy sources and generation, energy storage, transmission and trading, as well as the distribution and billing of energy, and energy security.

Driven by societal demands for greater climate protection and sustainability, and in line with the general trend towards decarbonisation, renewable energies are set to account for the bulk of the energy supply by 2050, at 80 %, whilst remaining reliable, secure, environmentally sound, economically efficient and affordable. The sector is therefore undergoing a period of extremely rapid change. Alongside biogas and green hydrogen, the main areas of renewable energy production today are wind power and photovoltaics. In addition to the shift in energy sources used in production and generation, this also represents, to a large extent, a paradigm shift towards much greater decentralisation of grids and their intelligent design as smart grids.

The energy sector remains a strong industry with considerable potential for growth. However, the shift towards renewable energy is injecting a significant new impetus into the energy sector’s labour market.
